Hey all,
Who's on "The Community" e-mail list? I'm curious how it's going and if the conversation has changed at all. I'm definitely missing having a list with the men and women of the community, but didn't find that particular list as stimulating and transformational as it was in the past.

Re: Community list
Sat, November 27, 2004 - 11:51 AMHey De --
The Community list today contains 150 people (down from about 250 in its crazy heyday in 2002) and it's averaging about ~7 posts per day these days (as opposed to ~20+). Back in those days we had a lot of "hey there's a cool party" announcments and arguing which simply is not present now.
Currently on the list there are lots of people posting and participating whom you'd recognize: Patrick O'Toole, Craig Issod, Jamie Luv, Scott Hannon, Jen Clemente, Jason McClain, Glitter Girl, myself -- those are some of the most recent posters (I just pulled that off the list archive of the latest posts.) Some people who left for a time have recently re-subscribed.
I would say that the best way to see "what the conversation is like" on the list is to re-subscribe and check it for yourself! And I invite you (and everyone else who might share De's curiosity) to do so!

Re: Community list
Sat, November 27, 2004 - 12:16 PMHey everybody -- here are some thoughts regarding The Community email list which I sent to some key PAST participants, as well as some dynamite POTENTIAL participants. Several people did respond affirmatively to my invitation.
So, check it, and if something resonates for YOU, and you're not already on the list, I invite you to step into the conversation!

The definition of the term "cross-pollination" is:
1. the fertilization by transfer of pollen from the anthers of one
flower to the stigma of another.
2. a stimulating influence among diverse elements; "the
cross-pollination of the arts."
www.cogsci.princeton.edu/cgi-bin/webwn
Hello. Permit me to take a moment out of your busy day to speak to you for a moment about CROSS-POLLINATION. Specifically, the kind of unique and STIMULATING action and connection and creation that is possible when DIVERSE ELELEMENTS -- people from a wide variety of backgrounds and "secnes" -- come together to play and work together in a shared space.
And WHAT KIND of "shared space"? Well, I'm not talking about just ANY shared space. I'm talking about a really unique and fantastic shared shared space, THE primary resource -- The Mothership, if you will -- the Community email list.
Wow -- for the past SIX YEARS, the Community email list has been KEY in helping build and strengthen connections amongst a truly extraordinary group of people.
You are reading this message because you are in one of three categories:
1) you are a former Community List participant
2) you are currently a List subscriber who hasn't been active for awhile, or
3) you are somebody who has NEVER been on the Community List, but who somebody/bodies in our shared community has identified as really cool and special who would add a lot to our Community (we also think you'd get a lot out of your particpation with us, too).
If you are in category #3, you may be wondering -- "well, what's so special about an EMAIL LIST, anyway?" What makes our list so powerful and unique is WHO is on this list and WHAT THEY ARE UP TO in the world. The people and activity on our list is about: Being extraordinary, living life FULLY, self-inquiry, passion, having and experiencing more and more deeply and standing for OUTRAGEOUS POSSIBILITY in the world -- all while having a totally HUGE amount of FUN.
If you are a Community List "veteran" -- think for a moment of all the "sub communities" and parties and other connections that have spun out of the Mothership. Many of these are now ongoing, active and thriving worlds unto themselves.
But, consider: there is ONE place -- and ONLY one place -- where all the roads INTERSECT. And that place is the Community List. I say: if we were to switch the List off tomorrow, we would have to re-create it, because the Community List IS the place where Arete meets the OneTaste Center meets Sterling meets Landmark meets Rhythm Society meets Raise The Freak meets the Family of Women meets Gratitude meets Soul2Soul meets men's circles meets women's circles meets Connexus meets yoga meets Mt. Olympus and the Narnia Dome out on the Playa meets KungFu USA meets NLP meets IGNITE! meets More University meets Infuse meets softball games meets tantra meets the the Mens Division International meets the Insight Institute meets SpiralMuse meets Hypnoisis meets Bondage meets DJs meets hiking Mount Shasta meets bodywork...
...and on and on and on.

"The mailing list is probably the most visible and connecting structure that brings existence to Community." -- George Feil, creator of the Community List and original List Administrator 11/4/02

So now, please take a moment -- imagine what might be possible for YOU and WHAT YOU ARE UP TO in your life if you could (re-)connect with a over a hundred and fifty people who are curious, powerful, have demonstrated a committment to living passionate, fully expressed lives, and who consistently are a "yes" to taking on outrageous creation and connection at whole new levels of FUN?
Would that kick you into a whole new gear? Could that open up new horizons of joy and growth and connection otherwise unavailable?
I assert: You bet your sweet behind it would!
Man, it always blows me away: there is so much excellence and diversity and energy in our Community, on our list.
Our Community doesn't have any president or officers -- there are no structures (other than the list.) Our Community is really a CONVERSATION -- an incredibly great conversation which happens -- in large measure -- on our Community list.
So, now, I invite YOU to add YOUR VOICE to our spicy gumbo!
Come party-cipate in the CROSS-POLLINATION that happens on our list!
Some parameters:
Right now, we have approximately 150 Community List members. I've been the co-moderator (with Gustavo Duarte) of the list for the past five months, and over that span, we've seen the membership stay right about at 150 members, with perhaps a slight increase in membership over that time
As for traffic: We get an average of 10 emails a day on the Community list.
You can join the Community list by going over to
lists.the-community.com/mailma...mmunity
and following the simple instructions there.
Once you have joined up, you'll have control over how you receive list emails -- you can either receive each email individually, or you can get a "digest" of the days Community list emails delivered to your inbox once per day. You can also shut off mail delivery for a time if you go on vacation or want a break or whatever -- the web interface is easy to use.
We also have the COMMUNITY CALENDAR of events on the WEB now, check out:
community.the-community.com/
To see what's going on in the weeks to come.
(We are also pulling in feeds from the "Community" and "Landmark Education" tribes on Tribe.Net on the website, to go along with our calendar.)
For those of you who are already on the list and from whom we haven't heard in awhile -- it'd be great to hear your voice again on the list. I hate to repeat the old saw about "you get out of it what you put into it," but, however, it IS IN FACT the case. So, get back ON THE COURT, and we'll pass you the ball!
Finally, I just want to say that this email is my own personal communication. There was no "recruitment drive" decided on by some "committee" somewhere; I have simply been getting REALLY present to the profound impact my participation with The Community has had on my life over the past TEN YEARS. And a large part of that impact has been facilitated by and enhanced by my participation on the Community email list since its creation in 1998. And right up to the present moment, he process of connection and contribution and creation continue on the list -- two of the latest projects being the OPULENT TEMPLE OF VENUS Burning Man camp and the BURNING DESIRES group for people in any kind of 12-step recovery program. And the cross-pollination and connection and "remixing" continues on and on. And, as I've been thinking and feeling all of this, I was inspired to reach out to YOU, to invite you to beam (back) up to the MOTHERSHIP and GET DOWN with all of us, and with your bad self!
That's it! I look forward to seeing YOU on the Community List!

Re: Community list
Thu, December 2, 2004 - 3:50 PMRight now I'm making noise about this booby party, Dierdre.
It's been enlightening and 'juicy' - though probably not for the poor photographer whose professional integrity I challenged or for anybody who drink the 'spiritual transformation through embracing hedonism as a means' Koolaid.
The gyst: A friend of mine was invited to be photographed for an honerable and englightening display of breasts to demonstate their endless variety and beauty. Great idea. Yay.
But then, trouble started. She was got the Evite and went, holy shit. She dissapointed by the way the event around the exhibit was portrayed. It was not an artistic venue as it was verbally described but a hedonistic party involving words like titilation. You can read the advertisement for groping and 'breast in show' all over tribe. Read: open invitation for groping. Not a private event. This equals high creep factor.
This is more of a problem for the organizers so I'll stay off this one. However, there's a legal issue that could be made.
I asked her if she had signed a form releasing her images and she said no. She was not informed verballly prior to getting the Evite about the nature of event, one at which she feels not at all comfortable participating in.
So I called into question the professionalism and now it's generating some amount of interest, though I'm afraid the responses from the 'defenders' have been more about the feminist nature of it all (ala boobies are great. we need to release the shackles of oppression) and not about the fact that the artist legally has no right to display the pictures without a consent form.
Anyway, fun stuff. Glad to be back (I think).

Thanks for sharing Ms. J"B"C -
